BudgetVM $5 plan is very limited

Last updated on

At less than $5 per month for 1 CPU core, 1GB RAM and 75GB SSD appears to be a great deal. Further scrutiny reveals the plan has many weaknesses.

Setup

Setup was quite fast, payment with Paypal is simple.

The Ubuntu 14.04 image has a awkward choice of packages:

  • No locale is selected, resulting in a flood of warning messages whenever installing new packages.
  • Apache 2 is pre-installed conflicting with other HTTP servers that you'd rather use.

Performance

Quite bad: 149ms average response time. That puts this BudgetVM plan next to last just above the Scaleway ARM based plan. The response times vary a lot raising the p99 to 550ms on most days (dead last).

Reliability

Monitoring reported the server could not be reached for several minutes on Friday morning. For 3 hours around the incident, average response time was multiplied by 6 to 700ms.

Now here is the worst part: I contacted support about this and got this response:
"This is due to your VPS being automatically rebooted for a load spike. We have scripts in place that do this to prevent abuse to the node and preserve quality service to our other customers on the node. The script automatically reboots a VPS if the load goes over 3 times the amount of CPU cores your server is assigned."

This is not actually what happened, the VPS was not rebooted. But regardless, rebooting a customer server without prior notice is just unacceptable.

Overall, you get what you pay for. To be avoided for any kind of production service.
