Vultr performances are down

Last updated on

6 months ago, Vultr was the fastest provider for both 1GB and 2GB plans with average response times respectively at 26 and 30ms and a P99 below 80ms for both. We've tested those plans again during the past 2 weeks. Times have changed, the response times are now vastly slower and the prices have increased (+$1 for each plan).

Considering the application took a big penalty when it was upgraded to Rails 4 from Rails 3, we can't compare the numbers directly. But after adjustment, it's an approximate 60% performance degradation compared to the trials 6 months ago.

$8 plan
Average: 69ms
1% slowest requests (P99): 270ms

$16 plan
Average: 64ms
1% slowest: 220ms

Despite of the recent price increase, Vultr is still cheaper than DigitalOcean and Linode and even now the performances are still very decent (middle of the pack).

There was one incident during the trial related to the Venom vulnerability patching: the VM died and did not restart automatically, we're wondering if it would still be down had we not discovered the problem and restarted it ourselves.

The chart on the vpsbenchmarks.com home page will be updated once providers are tested with the application running on Rails 4.
