We have run a full suite of performance tests on the VPS Classic 2 VPS plan of OVHcloud US. VPSBenchmarks bought, setup the server and started the tests.

Test Results

  • Web Runs: performance of a web application running on the server with locally generated load. Latencies and max request rate.
  • Sysbench: CPU, disk IO and memory speed tests.
  • Endurance: output over time of a long running cpu intensive application.
  • Network Transfers: maximum HTTP download and upload speeds between the VPS and servers located nearby.
  • Yabs: test suite that includes Geekbench CPU tests, Fio for disk IO and Iperf3 for network transfers.
  • Live Web Tests: latencies of a web application with live traffic.

Live Web

Web performance is measured locally on the VPS and includes Rails app response times to live web traffic as well as system metrics.

OVH VPS classic 2 is the slowest Jan 26 2015

The OVH VPS Classic 2 plan gets the dubious distinction of being the slowest of all plans ever tested at vpsbenchmarks.com.

To be fair this $7 plan is among the cheapest OVH offers so it would wrong to expectations too high. This being said, for the same price both Vultr and Vpsdime offer VMs that are respectively 8 and 2.5 times faster.

Average response time over 9 days: 202ms.

The speed of the VM was very uneven. The range of daily average response time was between 145ms and 273ms. The slowest 1% of request (P99) was over 1400ms over 1 day. On 10 minute interval, the P99 went easily over 2500 ms.
