High Frequency Cloud Server Performance Comparison

This report was created on November 18, 2020 by VPSBenchmarks using benchmarks that were run between October 30, 2019 and November 05, 2020.

About VPSBenchmarks

VPSBenchmarks is the world leading service for measuring the performance of cloud servers. Every year, more than 30 providers and 150 servers are tested in depth and their performance is reported at https://www.vpsbenchmarks.com. VPSBenchmarks has been evaluating cloud servers since 2014.


Test Methodology

VPSBenchmarks buys cloud servers directly from cloud providers. It sets them up with Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04 and installs test software on each new instance. The specifications of tested servers are collected and uploaded to VPSBenchmarks. Four types of benchmarks are run on every instance:

  • Web
  • Sysbench CPU, storage and memory
  • Network Transfers
  • Endurance

Numerous metrics are generated from each benchmark and they are grouped into performance categories (Web, CPU, Disk IO, Network and Stability). Then a grade from A to F is calculated in each category for the evaluated server.


Introduction

LayerStack commissioned VPSBenchmarks to evaluate the performance of virtual machines (VMs) from different Cloud Service Providers (CSPs): Linode, and Vultr. VPSBenchmarks tested the various VMs to evaluate the performance of Web, CPU, Disk IO, Network and Stability of each provider’s VMs. The purpose of this report was to understand Cloud service performance among major Cloud providers with similarly-sized VMs using a standardized, repeatable testing methodology. Based on the analysis, LayerStack’s VM performance was superior in nearly all measured VM performance dimensions, and LayerStack provides some of the most compelling performance per dollar available in the industry.

Endurance

The Endurance tests runs a CPU intensive test on the VPS for 24 hours straight. The throughput of the test as well as its stability are measured and collected.

Web Runs

Web Runs are designed to measured the latencies of a web application running on the VPS. The tests are run locally at various rates of requests per second. Latencies and error rates are collected at each load level.
