We have run a full suite of performance tests on the 1GB $10 VPS plan of Akamai. VPSBenchmarks bought, setup the server and started the tests.

Note: the CPU details Frequency is the frequency observed at the start of the trial. It may vary as the trial progresses.

Test Results

  • Web Runs: performance of a web application running on the server with locally generated load. Latencies and max request rate.
  • Sysbench: CPU, disk IO and memory speed tests.
  • Endurance: output over time of a long running cpu intensive application.
  • Network Transfers: maximum HTTP download and upload speeds between the VPS and servers located nearby.
  • Yabs: test suite that includes Geekbench CPU tests, Fio for disk IO and Iperf3 for network transfers.
  • Live Web Tests: latencies of a web application with live traffic.

Live Web

Web performance is measured locally on the VPS and includes Rails app response times to live web traffic as well as system metrics.

Linode $10 plan test results are in Feb 01 2015

It's the second time we are testing the Linode $10 plan at vpsbenchmarks.com and same as the first time Linode got very good performances.

  • Trial: Jan 25th 2015
  • VM setup time (system packages, configuration, database setup, application setup): 13 minutes.
  • Average response time: 52ms
  • 99th percentile response time: 190ms

Some IOWait and CPU steal but that didn't affect the end result negatively. In fact it's good to see non zero CPU steal numbers as cpu steal exists on all VPS but is hidden by most providers. Linode is simply being more transparent by reporting it. Of course there is also the possibility that Xen, used by Linode, reports it while KVM does not.

Worth noting too is that the response time averaged...
